Historical Description:

Considering that permanent bridges were almost the first casualties, Pontoon bridges were used extensively during the Civil War. Each command may have 30+ pontoon wagons each containing all the tools necessary to set up a bridge. These bridges provided the main link to supply lines and reinforcements in areas where the main bridges had been destroyed, or were non-existent. Each pontoon boat would be about 20+ feet in length and about 2-3 feet deep. The bridge built by the Union (boys in blue) across the James was about 2,200 feet long and was constructed in five + hours.
